The Company and the Role:

Wessex Cancer Trust is a medium-sized charity which offers support to people affected by cancer, their families and friends. The charity operates in Hampshire, IOW, Dorset and Wiltshire and runs 4 drop-in support centres and a range of outreach projects in hospitals and in the community. The charity is driven to evolve and grow in response to the needs of their service users. The challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have proved how well they can achieve this.

Their new CEO joined in July 2020 and as they head towards their 40th birthday this year they are now planning how to use the knowledge and experience they have gained during COVID, to reach more people in more ways.

The Trust relies on voluntary income to fund its work, raising money through fundraising activities and via a trading subsidiary of charity shops. In 2019 it had a combined turnover of £1.9m.

They are now seeking a Deputy Head of Service Delivery, to work with and deputise for the

Head of Service Delivery to manage the team in delivering high quality and

effective services to local people impacted by cancer.

You will also support developments in service delivery, leading on the implementation

of projects as per the charity`s strategy. 

Key Features of the Role:

  • To ensure that services teams implement and maintain the best standards for clients, in a safe, responsible and supportive manner, complying with policies and procedures in place.  
  • To line manage members of the service delivery team effectively when required to achieve strong performance whilst ensuring staff are motivated and supported. 
  • To review policy and procedures regularly with the support of the Head of Service Delivery and CEO.  
  • To ensure all services projects are delivered in line with grant agreements, ensuring that monitoring and evaluation is compliant, and reporting is of a high standard.  
  • Lead on the implementation of several projects and programmes to develop our service delivery, such as increasing our outreach services and embedding the new digital case management system.  
  • Assist with producing quarterly reports to the Board. In the absence of the Head of Service Delivery to attend and participate in Board meetings and sub-committee meetings.  

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • A reliable project manager with experience in therapeutic service provision. 
  • A strategic thinker who can create, develop and implement multiple strategies and projects and empower others in the team to do the same. 
  • Strong written and verbal communicator, with experience of preparing and delivering high quality reports, briefings and presentations that set out information, analysis and interpretation in a persuasive manner based on evidence. 
  • Proven ability to prioritise work and manage multiple priorities. 
  • Conscientious and pro-active problem-solver. 
  • Education and/or training in mental health or therapeutic support services.   
  • Experience and understanding of health and/or charity sector. 
  • Self-motivated to set and achieve ambitious service delivery expectations. 
  • Experience managing and monitoring budgets and spend.  
  • Resilience and keenness to work flexibly within an emotionally demanding organisation and often sensitive environment.

With the impact of Covid, this year will be crucial for Wessex Cancer Trust. This is an important role within the charity, in the provision of high quality services to cancer patients.

Salary is £30,000 - 33,000 per annum together with contributory pension scheme, 25 days holiday, free parking, cycle to work scheme, employee counselling helpline, mental health first aiders and a personal development programme.

The position is full time 37.5 hours per week and is offered on a Fixed Term Contract of 12 months duration.
