The Company and the Role:

Wessex Cancer Trust is a medium-sized charity which offers support to people affected by cancer, their families and friends. The charity operates in Hampshire, IOW, Dorset and Wiltshire and runs 4 drop-in support centres and a range of outreach projects in hospitals and in the community. The charity is driven to evolve and grow in response to the needs of their service users. The challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have proved how well they can achieve this.

Their new CEO joined in July 2020 and as they head towards their 40th birthday this year they are now planning how to use the knowledge and experience they have gained during COVID, to reach more people in more ways.

The Trust relies on voluntary income to fund its work, raising money through fundraising activities and via a trading subsidiary of charity shops. In 2019 it had a combined turnover of £1.9m.

They are now seeking an enthusiastic Retail Support Assistant to be based at their Portchester shop, to support the Manager in the smooth running of the shop, with responsibility for supporting the shop teams in enhancing their online retail offering, covering the Shop Manager on their day off and covering holidays as required. 

The role is 1 day per week (7.5 hours) contracted with additional hours/days as required/by

arrangement.

Key Features of the Role:

  • Assisting the shop team in driving sales and achieving company objectives, whilst helping with new initiatives.
  • Working with the retail team to achieve annual sales and gift aid targets.
  • Building strong relationships with the Shop Managers, volunteers and shop teams with clear communication and a polite and respectful manner.
  • Spending time at our shop as directed, supporting, developing, promoting and growing our online presence through our partnership with Thriftify and working to agreed targets. Covering days off and holidays as keyholder with responsibility for the operation of the store.
  • Following all shop procedures and guidelines as listed in the Staff Handbook and Retail Operations Manual.
  • Building strong relationships with the Shop Managers, volunteers and shop teams with clear communication and a polite and respectful manner.
  • Assisting with the movement of stock around the shops.
  • Supporting the Retail Manager in instilling best practice and supporting marketing campaigns and events.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Ideally have some retail shop experience
  • Basic IT skills with knowledge of MS word/Excel.
  • Literacy and numeracy skills to a GCSE standard.
  • A general awareness of fashion/trends and basic knowledge of brands.
  • A \"can do\" attitude and positive approach.
  • Energetic and a real passion to achieve results.
  • Ability to work unsupervised alone or within a team.
  • Friendly, approachable and resilient with knowledge and understanding of working alongside and leading volunteers.
  • Access to transport or reliable public transport.

7.5 hours per week, one day a week, to be agreed.
