A leading company in the UK specialising in providing maritime solutions is seeking an experienced Marine Engineer to provide assistance to the Master of a vessel and ensure the vessel is running in a safe and efficient manner. The Marine Engineer must have a UK driving licence and have a minimum qualification equivalent to a Second Engineer SV (<3000gt and <9000kW COC). Please expect the occasional weekend and evening work. Due to the nature of this role you will need to undergo security clearance checks and in case of emergencies be in a commutable distance from their site in Plymouth.
Applications from suitably experienced ex-military personnel (Royal Navy, Royal Fleet Auxiliary, Submarine Service or Royal Marines) are strongly encouraged.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all propulsion, auxiliary and deck machinery, electrical appliances, air conditioning, domestic installations, fittings and structures, RIB & deck crane.
- Consult daily with the Master to achieve the maximum economy consistent with the minimum efficiency required. Keeping the Master fully informed of any occurrences in the engine room or deck equipment which might affect navigation or the essential services under his or her control.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant oil and environmental pollution prevention legislation and to ensure that all responsible crew are familiar with emergency procedures, contingency plans and capable of operating all safety and pollution prevention equipment and appliance.
- Be familiar with details of vessel’s construction, machinery and operating characteristics and take overall responsibility for the configuration of the vessel and all systems and equipment.
- Keep an account of all labour coming under jurisdiction so that contractors’ bills can be checked and to ensure suitable quality of workmanship.
- Keep accurate records of bunkers, lubricating oils and water consumed.
- Carry out all planned maintenance, and both normal and emergency repair work. Ensuring that all work is planned for minimum disruption to the vessel’s overall programme and maximum reliability and availability of the plant.
- Adhere to Company rules and procedures relating to the department, making sure that all staff are alerted to Company requirements particularly safety, on any relevant matters
- Make regular inspections of machinery and machinery spaces
- Be responsible for the bunkering of the vessel and ensuring that the quantity and quality is as ordered.
- Arranging all transfers of fuel/lubricant oil/ballast/fresh water and checking plans with superiors.
- Preparing all spare gear orders and inventory lists, and ensure spares are adequate.
- Keep all engine room records as required by the Company.
- Return to base office any company reports and forms agreed by the Company.
- Deal with the administration and upkeep of classification society survey requirements.
- Responsible for the security of all watertight compartments; give/receive appropriate and detailed handover when joining/leaving Company vessel.
- Carry-out any other duties as may reasonably be requested.
Person Specification:
- Been resident in the UK for at least 3 years
- Full and valid driving licence
- Minimum Second Engineer SV - <3000gt and <9000kW COC (or equivalent) qualifications
- Hold an ENG1 medical certificate
- Be happy with occasional weekend and evening working when necessary
- Be based in a commutable distance from the site
- Recent commercial seagoing experience (desirable)
