Description :

A Bursar is required for a small independent day school in Ilford, Essex. This is a rewarding and yet demanding role where the ability to be flexible, adaptable and multi-task is vital. Ideally, applicants should have previous experience of finance and accounting, Health and safety, commercial and HR familiarities. In addition, the Bursar will preferably have practical skills to carry out basic defect rectification and manage maintenance and repair issues throughout the site. Training will be provided for the successful candidate.

Applications from suitably experienced ex-military personnel (British Army, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy or Royal Marines) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Main Duties:

  • Preparation of annual budget and termly management accounts, prepare statutory accounts for the auditors and produce annual statutory returns to HMRC.
  • Manage all finance and accountancy tasks
  • Analysis, documentation and updating of systems of internal financial controls
  • Ensure the school has adequate insurance cover at all times
  • Assessment of the appropriateness of accounting software
  • Review of the tax position of the school with relevant professional advisers.
  • Compilation and delivery of a presentation to staff regarding the school finances with the aim of reducing expenditure.
  • Issue staff contracts, offer letters and annual salary letters
  • Maintaining Single Central Register
  • Basic administration of Governing body, arranging and scheduling of Governors’ meetings, minuting and producing agendas for Governor and subsidiary committee
  • Preparation and submission of statutory returns to Companies House and the Charity Commission
  • Review and maintain the School’s GDPR data protection policy and proposal for process for communicating changes to staff.
  • Oversee maintenance and repair of buildings, grounds, plant and equipment
  • Development of procurement policy and apply to hiring/leasing of equipment, ensuring licences are up-to-date, as well as conducing reviews of spending on utilities
  • Discuss issues pertaining to the business and bursarial running of the school
  • Attend staff briefings as required

  • Good level of numeracy and literacy

Desirable:

  • Previous experience as a Bursar / in a similar role

Salary:

£35,000 - £40,000
