Description :

A dynamic and reliable Software/Systems Support Engineer is required to provide customers with engineering support for in house developed software. Our client is a proven leader in location-based software and is a world-wide service provider. A Software/Systems Support Engineer will be working closely with the Operations and Development teams, but also will be expected to take responsibility for achieving objectives with minimal supervision. As well as having some basic Linux, database and some networking skills, the Software/Systems Support Engineer will be able to take on more responsibilities depending on their experience. There is a great deal of scope for technical development in this role and will be largely on the job and peer led. This is an excellent opportunity for a Software/Systems Support Engineer to join a small company with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere who is making a big impact in their sector.

Applications from ex-military personnel (Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Marines) will be particularly relevant for this role and are strongly encouraged.

Key responsibilities:

2nd and 3rd Line Support

  • Remote troubleshooting and problem analysis on systems deployed to a Linux environment in our customer environments
  • Proactively monitoring and verifying the deployed solutions and their behaviour
  • Routine customer communication to track issues, liaising directly with customers and in-country partners
  • Taking support calls from customer technical teams via phone, email or ticketing system.
  • Taking responsibility for the above and following to resolution
  • Reproducing issues or bugs in local environments and creating Jira issue reports
  • Providing customers with advice, guidelines, and/or documentation
  • Some configuration of in-house software
  • Assistance with analysis of test results from customer deployments
  • Covering out of hours customer contact if required

Potential Responsibilities (depending on experience)

  • Troubleshooting GMLC/SMLC to Core/Radio network integrations.
  • Troubleshooting of networking equipment (load balancers, switches, VPN, etc.).

Skills and Personal Attributes

Required

  • Able to communicate and liaise with customers whose first language is not English at a technical level
  • Familiar with Linux systems, database and some networking skills
  • Familiar with SQL, preferably with MySQL or Postgres
  • Able to write quality technical documentation, i.e., user guides, operation manuals in English
  • Bright, dynamic and reliable with excellent problem solving skills

Desirable

  • Knowledge of location technologies and/or experience with geo-location data
  • Knowledge of other languages – e.g. Spanish, Arabic
  • Knowledge of Telecom environment and technologies including OSS / BSS industries
  • Experience of ITIL processes

Qualifications

  • A BSc minimum is required (equivalent to UK 2:1) in Software Eng., Telecom Eng., or Computer Science
  • Or a BSc in a non-related subject, but an MSc in Computer Science is acceptable.

Salary:             £35,000 - £40,000 per annum, permanent contract     

Benefits:           Company pension scheme, employee shared-options scheme, company performance-related bonus scheme, 22 days annual leave + bank holidays, 2-3 company activity days per year

Hours:              9:00am – 5:30pm, with some out-of-hours work

Travel:              Potentially one overseas trip per year, 3-5 days
