The world’s largest manufacturer of high-technology cables and systems for energy and telecommunications is now looking for a Test Technician to join its team. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Test Technician will be responsible for testing the designs of optical fibre products (cables & blown fibre units) for a range of UK and overseas customers, to ensure they meet customer and international standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Day to day management of the on-site testing laboratory, with the support of a Test Engineer Apprentice.
- Preparation & delivery of telecom cable test qualification programs on time and in budget.
- Liaison with production to secure cable samples necessary for testing.
- Preparation and conducting of mechanical and environmental cable testing using the laboratory equipment such as tensile, crush, bend, impact and temperature cycling.
- Preparation of detailed test reports of all tests conducted.
- Maintenance of the test report database, providing copies of test packages to support design engineering and commercial as necessary.
- Maintain an up to date knowledge of the relevant cable test specifications and ensure tests are carried out to the latest standards.
- Liaison with other internal and external test laboratories as necessary for testing on a case by case basis.
- Develop new tests to meet customer requirements as part of team along with design engineering.
- Provide test support for the quality engineering department for customer factory acceptance testing.
- Provide test support for production for batch testing as required.
- Providing test support to product development and material approval projects
- Liaise with installation engineers and connectivity engineers as necessary.
- Provide updates to the Engineering Manager on tasks and projects on a daily and weekly basis, along with formal close out presentations on completed projects.
Short duration travel in the UK and overseas may occasionally be required.
Key Qualifications and Experience
- Educated to HND level or above in a relevant Engineering subject.
- Demonstrate a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Demonstrate problem solving skills, tenacity and capability to work independently on projects or as part of a team.
- Product knowledge including materials and cable manufacturing processes would be advantageous, but suitable training will be provided.
- IT skills in MS Office necessary. Familiarity with LabVIEW beneficial although training will be provided as needed.
- Applicants should be comfortable with communicate internally at all levels of the business, with both technical and non-technical people.
- It is essential that candidates have a driving licence as there may be some infrequent travel for business purposes.
