Description :
National Careers Service Adviser In Custody based in West Midlands. This is a full time, permanent position.



Provide information, advice and guidance on careers and skills to clients in custody to assist them to take up sustainable employment on release, with NVQ 4 IAG qualification or trainee wage.

Job Description



The NCS Adviser will work in one of the two prisons delivering the National Careers Service to those serving custodial sentences and also within the community. Face to face work is delivered in groups and on a one to one basis. Advisers need to take a proactive approach to marketing the service to engage prisoners and ensure a good take up of the service. The ability to work with internal and external partners is critical including Prison staff and managers, the learning provider, Jobcentre Plus, Work Programme providers, employers, community rehabilitation Companies and other support agencies.







Responsibilities:



* Provide careers and skills advice, guidance and information to adult offenders currently serving a sentence. There will also be an element of through the gate support.
* Deliver a responsive service that supports the client, the expectations of the Heads of Learning & Skills, and fulfils the delivery plan objectives, targets and delivery processes agreed with Prospects and the Skills Funding Agency
* Promote the service professionally within the prison estate
* Deliver a programme of individual support to offender learners that recognises the needs of vulnerable prisoners and ethnic minorities.
* Pro-actively follow up clients in order to assess their progress
* Liaise with providers and other relevant agencies, inside and outside prisons in order to source relevant opportunities for offender learners
* Attend all relevant meetings/case conferences as required
* Use established tools and techniques, as appropriate, to carry out initial assessment and profiling with clients
* Complete action plans and management information returns in line with contract requirements and the service specification
* Represent and promote Prospects Services in a professional manner, working effectively with other agencies
* Collect information from clients and other stakeholders about the effectiveness of the service
* Meet with prison staff in order to ensure that service delivery arrangements fit in with prison policies, systems and procedures
* Participate in case conferences where required and give feedback to prison staff on the progress of individual clients
* Comply with prison security arrangements and pursue working methods that are coherent with safe working practices
* Keep up-to-date with opportunities, services and issues likely to affect prisoners and their resettlement in the community
* Participate in professional development activities
* Attend Company meetings and training and liaise with staff at all levels
* Other duties commensurate with the nature and level of the post







Personal Specification



* Educated to NVQ 4 or equivalent (qualification will be provided if not at acquired level)
* Previous experience of working with people and supporting them into work/training
* Ideally candidates will have worked with offenders in a prison setting or ex-offenders in the community
* The ability to work flexibly within a secure environment
* The ability to work in a pro-active and flexible way to meet targets
* The ability to deal sensitively and confidently with this client group and to be able to encourage them to rehabilitate
* Excellent communication skills: the ability to liaise at all levels including working with staff in the prison as well as organisations in the community
* An ability to market a new service and be innovative and flexible in order to meet objectives
* A strong negotiator who understands the importance of networking and partnership work
* A willingness to travel in the region
* Good organisation, administrative and ICT skills
