The world’s largest manufacturer of high-technology cables and systems for energy and telecommunications is now looking for a Trainee Design Engineer to join its Installation Design team.
Reporting to the Technical Services Manager, the Trainee Design Engineer will work closely with other functions beyond the Installation Design group to develop a range of skills and experience to provide a broad understanding of all aspects of High Voltage Cables Engineering. These functions include Cable & Accessory Design and Manufacturing, System Design, Bid Management, Site Engineering, Project Management, Commissioning Testing, Maintenance Services, and short placements may form part of the development of the successful applicant.
The Trainee Design Engineer will work, from the beginning, on real projects in real situations, making a contribution to the success of the business, assisting experienced Designers, meeting with Customers and gradually undertaking their own design work. The duration of the development period will be flexible so as to match the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
Applications are welcome from recently qualified graduates in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related subject, or more experienced engineers having knowledge of power cable installation, from a design or site background. The training programme will be tailored to suit the individual.
This role would suit ex-military candidates and applications from ex-service personnel are strongly encouraged.
Key Responsibilities
To be part of a team of Installation Designers responsible for developing overall cable system designs to meet UK market requirements for underground cable links.
Work effectively and closely with other Company Engineers and with site staff and external customers up to a Chartered Engineer level.
Be an active part of the Design team which takes responsibility for the installation design for new HV/EHV cabling projects, both at the bid and contract stages.
Prepare and review installation design drawings and sketches.
Key Qualifications and Experience
- Ideally with one or two years previous experience.
- Educated preferably up to degree level or similar in a Civil Engineering/relevant Engineering subject.
- Several years’ industrial experience.
- A high degree of numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail.
- Product knowledge including cable manufacturing processes would be advantageous, but suitable training will be provided.
- IT skills in MS Office necessary. Experience with SAP or CA would be advantageous but suitable training will be provided.
